Just a couple of hours ago, I came across an open-source eCommerce platform: Magento. It looks to be an easy-to-use and easily customizable app. a demo is available online, you can go through to check out:
- Unlimited flexibility and no constraints
- A professional scalable architecture
- Integration with 3rd part apps
I was expecting something just like that for a long time, and definitely I would pay for this if it isn’t free. Maybe it’s time to open your own eshop and start to selling something.
As a starter, I’ve signed up for a light version copy. Unfortunately my FTP didn’t work properly, the upload process freezed for several time 
I can’t wait to have a quick test, if you’ve already given it a few rounds, please leave a comment with your thoughts.

For the past few days, I was leaning toward Oscommerce, which is also free, because it can deliver digital products.
However, Magento certainly looks great. I’ll give it a test run.
As for your upload, have you tried uploading the whole zip file and extracting afterward?

I briefly went through the Magento official website and it looks like it isn’t ready for small merchants yet. For starter, no PayPal.
Second, currently, Magento seems like the Habari (a blog platform) of e-commerce management systems. It requires PHP 5. Not to mention, it lacks the famous WordPress 5-minute installation so that’s going to be another hurdle for small merchants trying to set up their own e-shops.
Speaking of e-shops, Magento doesn’t support virtual products until near the end of 2007.
Other those yet-to-be developed areas, Magento looks promising.

Thank you, I really appreciate your updates. maybe it isn’t a good time for implement it.
After I’ve checking with my ISP, it has an alternative way to parses PHP, which means I have to forced to run PHP5 in some way and Wordpress might be messed up (hopefully not), well.. it’s kinda tricky so I leave it as is for now.
Let’s keep eyes on it

I have been watching this for several months now waiting for it to come out… now that it sounds ready, I’ve already written my own shopping cart from scratch.
I will be interested in integrating this into my next project however if it turns out to be as promising as it sounds - though not having PayPal integrated sounds odd.

I’ve installed it here on my hosting account on mediatemple, which supports PHP5 and the installation went fairly easily once I enabled PHP5 support in the control panel. However, the magento site seems to be slow (even when there’re no products!), I suspect that it’s mediatemple’s problem, because the “official demo” site loads much faster, and so do my other sites on the same server.
If the slowness is because of magento itself, I don’t see it possible to run a real shop yet. I have tried numerous e-commerce packages over the years, and built a dozen of oscommerce sites. Before magento releases the next version, I guess I’ll stick with CS-Cart for now, which is not open source but I found it to be most reliable and feature-rich.

The latest version is now available for download. The biggest highlight of the release is PayPal integration (view screencast) and multi-lingual support.
Magento supports two different PayPal methods for use in your websites and stores: PayPal Express, which allows the customer to check out from the PayPal site, and PayPal Direct, which offers credit card processing capability without the customer having to ever leave your store.
