Safari 4 Tabs back on Top!

One of the greatest features of Safari 4 beta is that it allows us to set tabs on top. For some reason Apple shut down this feature on Safari final release and leave us no option to bring it back (they shouldn’t).

There is no any hidden tweak or third-part app to bring tabs back on top since Apple made some changes on its mechanism, so we have to do a hack job - using some of resources from Safari 4 Beta installer to get them back. It works without a hassle on my mac (Snow Leopard 10.6.1). This might only work with Mac, and please do it at your own risk!

Okay first, I assume that you are running Snow Leopard already, we need to get a) Safari 4 beta installer - no longer available from Apple, I don’t know if you still got a backup file (but you still can get it from my Dropbox), download and save it on your external drive. b) Pacifist - this little app will help us to unpack any .pkg file.

safari 4 tabs on top walkthrough

1) Go to your application folder, open Safari 4.0.3 final package contents (right click on its icon). 2) copy info.plist, version.plist, and useragents.plist from within resources folder to somewhere else.

3) Remove Safari 4.0.3 main app (cmd+delete!), please notice that do not remove it by using any uninstall app, it will probably remove the preferences file along with it. If so, it will restarts with a Safari 4 final interface.

4) Now using Pacifist to unpack Safari 4 beta installer, and extract the main app to your application folder, once again open its package contents (right click on it again). Copy info.plist, version.plist, and useragents.plist into it from wherever you saved earlier.

That’s it! So far I’m running it on my mac for over 40 hrs and everything work just perfect! I hope you guys enjoy this hack.
